in one.
Well the latest addition to the Toxic pedal board, though there isn’t an actual board involved yet, just lends itself to some porn style soundtrack music it is of course an auto-wah, more precisely an MXR M-120 Auto Q.
It is in someway a piece of eBay driven P.A.S. (Pedal Acquisition Syndrome) – a subsection of G.A.S. (Guitar/Gear Acquisition Syndrome) – I hadn’t thought about getting an auto-wah before but saw an EH Mini Q-Tron going cheap, checked out the Peter Stroud demo video and figured yeah for the right price I could have some fun with that.
Of course the Q-Tron didn’t stay at the right price, well for me anyway, can’t see the point of buying a second hand pedal for a couple quid less than getting it new with all the guarantees and warranties. Can see even less point in paying a couple quid more for a used item than it would cost in a shop as recently happened to a Guyatone SV2 Slow Volume and MXR Super Comp I had my eye on.
So anyway chanced upon the MXR Auto-Q on the Bay which eventually went for the right price, well under half the price from the cheapest shops and closer to quarter the highest I’d seen it quoted at.
Not quite the same as the Q-Tron, with three more knobs for a start, I was happy it doesn’t add any gain like the EH model and like the shimmer effect on the end of decaying notes, can get the usual sounds, bit of funky waka waka and plenty of quacking wah.
Will have to start playing some Stevie Wonder, bit of “Higher Ground” though “Superstition” would be a different Stevie for me as a guitarist…
On the look out next well probably a tremolo pedal, something nice and swampy get a good “Born On The Bayou” sound going, the Seymour Duncan Shape Shifter looks the nuts but I doubt it’ll come around at my price 😀
Anyway plenty of time to play with the Q ’til then…You’re damn right…
You see this cat Shaft is a bad mother…Shut your mouth
But I’m talkin’ about Shaft…Then we can dig it.
