The dark art of the pedal steel

Maggie Björklund - Anchor Song - with drums: John Convertino of Calexico, vocals: Rachel Flotard of Visqueen, guitar: Rusty Willoughby, piano: Johnny Sangster, bass: Barrett Martin of Screaming Trees, cello & vocals: Barbara Hunter

An email the other day contained a reference to a song that was unfamiliar to me.

So a quick Google for Rachel Flotard and the track “Anchor Song” lead me to a video for the track by Maggie Björklund, who is one of those masters of the dark art of the pedal steel guitar – much like mine and Rachel’s good mate Jon “Orchid Fingers” Rauhouse – there’s a few videos of Rachel with Jon on his site.

During the back end of last month there were videos of Maggie Björklund playing a few tracks, from her new album – “Coming Home” on Bloodshot records – with a number of well known artists, released to various sites around teh interweb.

Here’s two of the videos with Rachel on lead vocals…

…top notch stuff. Will stick the rest up later.
