R.I.P. Dusty Hill

ZZ Top Live Germany 1979 @Rockpalast

and I thank you.

Sad news that Dusty Hill, one third of the Little Ol’ Band From Texas, ZZ Top, has died aged 72.

No the trio weren’t the original formation of ZZ Top but the three of Billy Gibbons, Frank Beard and Dusty Hill were the ones that up to now had recorded all the ZZ Top albums from “ZZ Top’s First Album” in 1971 – the year after Hill and Beard joined – to 2014’s “La Futura” – two great albums. Well, except for that drum machine of course.

The one that had been one of the longest surviving bands in rock and or roll.

With Gibbons’ swaggering guitar riffs and solos, Beard’s lack of a beard and driving drums and Dusty Hill’s grooving bass and vocals, they were a distinctive, sound like nobody else, band that managed to make a trio sound like a hell of a lot more people.

Everyone knows the videos, the girls, the car, the keyring, the fluffy guitars, the 80s hits but there is a hell of a lot more to the Top than those…. but they’re a great start.
