R.I.P. Rik Mayall

The Young Ones - Bambi - 8 May 1984

another piece of the childhood gone.

Crude, rude, trashy, vulgar from Kevin Turvey to Bottom via The Young Ones, the Comic Strip and The New Statesman that was Rik Mayall’s comedy and it made me laugh.

I suppose The Young Ones was one of my favourite shows at the time it was first broadcast – was it made better because your parents just didn’t get it?

Don’t which is my favourite episode out of the two above, “Bambi” or “Nasty”.

Then there was “Filthy, Rich & Catflap”, not quite as good but still crudely funny.

His portrayal of Alan B’Stard in “The New Statesman” was another spot on performance. Then there was Lord Flashheart in Blackadder.

during this there was “The Comic Strip Presents…” of which the “Bad News Tour” mockumentary that came out before “This Is Spinal Tap” is the best, along with the sequel “More Bad News”, which culminated in their appearance at the Castle Donington Monsters of Rock festival in 1986 – where they weren’t even bottom of the bill. Bloody YouTube banned the video.

Then there was “Bottom” everything about “The Young Ones” paired down and ramped up and ramped up even more live on stage.

Don’t know how spontaneous the ad libs were but when one or other, Richard “Richie” Richard or Edward “Eddie” Elizabeth Hitler, fucked up their lines really were but they were funny.

He was just manic on screen in various characters that you couldn’t see anyone else playing.
