The transfer deadline that time

forgot.

I couldn’t bring myself to watch the over excited Jim White orgasmfest that is Sky Sports News on transfer deadline day. It’s bad enough when he’s fronting the thing when nothing is happening on a day when nothing is meant to be happening but when nothing is happening on deadline day.. oh dear god.

I figured nothing that major would be happening any road, yes Spurs have done the big deadline deal before but the mood seemed to have changed this year, ‘Arry may want more faces but he’s reasonable happy with the squad and Levy has maybe had enough fingers burnt with last minute costly signings to put him off for a while.

Of course I wanted something to happen both ways and didn’t want something to happen at all, but even then the TV stayed switched off.

Well there goes another transfer window and yet again no single club showed any interest in Jenas, if he was as good as his fans would have us believe wouldn’t there be at least one inquiry, not just paper talk? So sadly the addition by subtraction deal didn’t go off, thankfully the subtraction by addition deal that would have been signing the clown David James didn’t come off either. ‘Arry likes him, likes him a lot and he likes ‘Arry which made it look like a real possibility, what with Gomes injury, Pompey having a fire sale and James looking at his World Cup place being in jeopardy with the likelyhood of a relegation fight on his hands.

But no, ‘Arry says it wasn’t gonna ‘appen, great but he did return to his previous club for one more signing, following Defoe and Crouch, Niko Kranjcar. A good move? Well we gave Pompey-Kevin Prince Boateng, who had promise but never really clicked and in return we get two million quid plus a 25 year old who has knocking on for 50 caps for Croatia and three years of Premier League experience. It’s a snip isn’t it?

A player ‘Arry got the best out of in his time on the South coast, so is he cover for Modric, sort of, what will happen when his little countryman returns, will one of them head for the centre of a midfield four? Not good news for Huddlestone who won’t progress and fulfil his potential without a real run in the side that has been denied him so far by the presence of Jenas but then it could also mean the end of the latter being a first pick. Clouds, silver lining all that.

No move for Bentley, no swap with Citeh for Petrov, players might have wanted it, agents certainly would have, managers say they didn’t. No central defensive back up for the injured mob, Ledley, Woodgate and Dawson. Upson, far too pricey for a limited player, Ferdinand of the Anton persuasion thank god that didn’t come off, even on loan. If he was half the player he thinks he is then yes but he ain’t by a long way.

And no cover for Palacios, this one causing a slight bit of panic after what happened to Modric at the weekend. Well it has taken us how long to finally get a hard man in the middle to do teh dirty work, can’t expect another one along so soon. But isn’t it Corluka’s favourite position, with Hutton not wanting a move North it means the Croat could fill in that role.
