Spurs and Ange should thank Brentford

and Thomas Frank.

Spurs ended their four game losing streak in the Premier League, doing the double over Brentford, with a 2-0 victory that was thanks in part to the host’s choice of goalkeeper.

So a four game losing streak, that was part of a eight game streak without a league victory, it’s just their second win in the league since the start of December, after that thumping of City, but as we’ve seen lately that’s nothing to crow about these days.

A run that even with this victory has seen David Moyes pick up more points over his last three games at Everton than Spurs have in their last 12 league games.

A run that’s seen some dull football, of which there was more on show here. Two shots. That’s all Spurs managed on target in the 90 plus minutes. two shots. And one of them didn’t even contribute to a goal.

It was a pretty equal first half. Pretty meh from both sides.

Spurs opened the scoring with an own goal, thanks in a major part to Brentford’s new keeper. Sonny’s in-swinging, near post corner going in off the home player as the keeper swung round him, going nowhere. The rest of the half Brentford were matching Spurs for shots off target. As said all kinda equally bad in a bad game.

Though Spurs should have had a penalty when Moore was pushed over in the box. Apparently blatant pushing like that is allowed. And you get the pundits saying “nah, never a foul, not in my day”. Yet you watch their day and the slightest contact of hand with a body and the whistle goes for a foul. Dimwit Jonathon Pearce immediately dismissed it as “shoulder to shoulder, nothing wrong with that”, which seems to be what the ref did, and VAR dismissed it equally as fast, even though the screeching banshee Pearce say his and the official’s mistake in the replay.

Half-time saw Moore replaced by Bergvall. The youngster hadn’t really been in the game but then he’s being played out of position as Ange accommodates his favourites. He still managed to touch the ball more than Richarlison. But then so did every Spurs’ player bar the keeper. As did every Brentford player bar one. The Brazilian was particularly useless throughout. Unable to hold the ball, lay it off, make a run, make a pass, pretty much anything.

It also saw Brentford up their game. They had more of the ball, were generally camped o the edge of Spurs’ area but still couldn’t convert shots to shots on goal and goals. They had 11 attempts, to Spurs’ three, but only managed two on target. Spurs managed that second shot on target. It came three minutes before the end of the 90 and was the best thing they did all afternoon.

Its tarted with a poorish ball from Kinsky to Bergvall, who had to stretch but managed to play it off to Gray, holding off a Brentford player he played it to Kulusevski, who played it back to Bentancur. A little run with the ball then out to Son, who sees Sarr on a charge and plays the perfect ball through the channel. The Brentford keeper comes out, pretty needlessly, and Sarr slides the ball through his legs.

A lovely team goal. A goal that shows what they can do, when they can string one pass together.

Frank isn’t the first manager to fluff his audition for the Spurs’ job. Ange did his usual whinge about playing midweek and having injuries. It was a win. A good win when you consider what Brentford do at home though this is their fifth home game in the league without a win.

Djed Spence was undoubtedly the man-of-the-match. And other excellent performance, again out of position at left-back, keeping an in form player like Mbeumo quiet for most of the game. Injuries eh Ange? Just think, without injuries and having his hand forced, I doubt Spence would have got a look in this season. Maybe the odd last minute time-wasting run out, or rest for Porro but not much else.

Bet Forest fans were entertained by the 7-0 thrashing of Brighton…
